Marquette Throttles Seton Hall Behind Overdue Offensive Efficiency

The middle of the Big East schedule has been a bit of a slog for Marquette(19-6, 10-4 Big East) to say the least. After dropping three straight games to top conference teams in UConn, St. John’s and Creighton, Marquette got back in the win column last week with a 10-point home victory over DePaul. Still a poor shooting night for Golden Eagles, their win over DePaul at least gave them some forward momentum leading into Tuesday night’s clash with Seton Hall(7-18, 2-12 Big East), where the shots would fall.

The offensive consistency that Marquette has desperately been missing showed up early and often on Tuesday night, led by Kam Jones. The All-American candidate has sputtered a bit as the team has lately, but Jones came out against Seton Hall with 7 of the first 9 Marquette points as the Golden Eagles ran out to a double-digit lead early. Even in the first half, game flow dictated a flurry of mass substitutions and lineup combinations, giving the Marquette bench plenty of run. The Golden Eagles bench would end up accounting for 19 of 40 first half points, and Marquette held a 17-point lead at the break.

The second half mimicked most of what the first had to offer. 50%+ shooting, and plenty of bench play and shares of baskets. Marquette’s lead would swell to as high as 31 before it was all said and done, as eleven total players would register points.

Possibly the “get right” game that they were looking for, Marquette shot 54% on the night and outrebounded Seton hall 40-24on their way to a 80-56 victory. A true team win gets them back on track as they head towards tougher competition on the road against Villanova this Friday.
