Tech N9ne: The Independent King Who Built a Hip-Hop Empire Appears on the Midwest Mixtape Podcast

When you talk about independence in hip-hop, one name stands above the rest: Tech N9ne. Born Aaron Dontez Yates in Kansas City, Missouri, Tech N9ne carved out a legacy not by chasing mainstream co-signs or major label deals, but by building his empire brick by brick—on his own terms. Co-founding Strange Music in 1999 with Travis O’Guin, Tech N9ne turned what many considered an uphill battle into one of the most successful independent careers in rap history.

Tech’s journey wasn’t overnight. He came up in an era where radio play, label backing, and East or West Coast affiliations often dictated success. But Tech9ne’s refusal to conform, coupled with his explosive delivery, rapid-fire rhyme schemes, and theatrical stage presence, won over a fiercely loyal fanbase known as “Technicians.” Touring relentlessly and treating his shows like high-octane rock concerts, Tech turned small venues into sold-out events, often outperforming artists with more radio hits and bigger budgets.

Strange Music became more than just a label—it became a blueprint. With over two decades of dominance, the label has sold millions of albums without major distribution and built a merchandising and touring infrastructure that rivals those of major labels. Tech N9ne’s authenticity, work ethic, and business savvy have made him a godfather of the independent rap movement, influencing artists far beyond his hometown. He’s collaborated with legends like Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes, and Corey Taylor of Slipknot, but his greatest partnership may still be with his fans—who continue to show up and show out for him year after year.

Tech N9ne is set to bring his electrifying stage presence to the Thuggish-Ruggish-Mafia Tour—a powerhouse lineup featuring hip-hop legends Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Three 6 Mafia, and DJ Quik. The 24-city North American run kicks off on August 21 and promises a stacked bill of raw lyricism, nostalgic anthems, and high-octane performances. One of the most anticipated stops on the tour lands in Tech’s 2nd home city: St. Louis, Missouri, on August 28 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater.

On top of his massive success and dedication to the indie grind, Tech9ne appeared on the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, offering insight into his roots, his creative process, and what keeps him hungry after all these years.
