B&S Rapid Review: The Last of Us S2 E4: “Day One”

Episode 4, “Day One,” introduces a new central character, beautifully recreates a beloved scene, and dishes out two huge reveals, all within its short 45-minute runtime. Jeffrey Wright is fantastic as Isaac, piquing curiosity around his character, the haunting recreations of the TV station and the subway land and are extremely satisfying, and Isabela Merced has her best episode of the season. However, some pacing issues in relationship and character development leave us grasping to keep up.

After an intense and fateful second episode of Season 2, the mood pendulum swings back the other way for episode 3: “The Path.” With the tragedy that we left sobbing on the couch last week comes the grief that we have to deal with in this one. From grieving to purpose, and from purpose to justice, “The Path” takes us down the road from healing and rebuilding and straight into uncharted territory with new terrain, new factions, and a new pair to experience it with. 

B&S Rapid Review: The Last of Us S2 E2: “Through the Valley”

Episode 2, “Through the Valley,” brilliantly delivers on The Last of Us’ most emotional and fateful plotline. It revels in its unnerving anxiety from start to finish, creating incredible uncomfortability and ensuring that both the viewer and the series will never be the same. Its addition of budget-busting infected sequences is some of the best work that we’ve seen in television, and its infamous series-altering scene leaves the viewer thinking about even more than what just happened in possibly the best episode in the series to date.
